The fastest app I use all day is a plain HTML page that a friend never finished. It has no spinner because it has nothing to spin about: the page arrives whole, the numbers are already there, and the only thing left to do is read.
We spent a decade teaching people that software breathes — that a moment of skeleton screens is the price of anything happening at all. But the waiting was never physics. Most of it was ceremony: a bundle asking for another bundle, a client rebuilding what the server already knew.
A page that arrives whole is not retro. It is what fast always looked like.
None of this is an argument against ambition. It is an argument about where the ambition goes — into the words and the numbers, or into the machinery that delays them.

Every theme in light and dark, side by side, all rendering the same
real slice of interface — heading, text with a link, both button
ranks, a labelled field, a result row. Choose a skin by looking, and
see the library's central idea at a glance: identical markup, ten
different results. Each panel is a real page pulling the same
facet.css this site uses.
